Stomach Pain (வயிற்று வலி)
Stomach pain—also called abdominal pain—is one of the most common reasons people seek medical care. It can range from mild discomfort or cramping to sharp, severe pain. Because many organs are located in the abdomen, including the stomach, liver, intestines, gallbladder, and pancreas, determining the exact cause often requires a careful medical evaluation.
Definition:
Stomach pain, or Abdominal pain, is discomfort or aching sensation felt anywhere between the chest and the groin. It is an extremely common complaint in all age groups, ranging from mild and temporary discomfort to severe, debilitating pain that requires immediate medical intervention. Since the abdomen houses many vital organs (stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, appendix), the cause of the pain can be vast, including simple indigestion, gas, muscular strain, constipation, or more serious conditions like appendicitis, kidney stones, or ulcers. The location, severity, and duration of the pain help in diagnosis.
Causes:
Indigestion, Gas/Flatulence, Constipation, infections (Gastroenteritis), Food Poisoning, Menstrual Cramps, Appendicitis, Gallstones, or Ulcers.
Symptoms:
Cramping, dull ache, sharp stabbing pain, burning sensation. May be accompanied by fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or blood in stool (in serious cases).
Investigation:
Depending on severity: Physical Palpation, Blood tests (CBC), Urine tests, X-ray, Ultrasound, or CT Scan of the abdomen.
Allopathy Treatment:
Treatment depends on the cause: Antispasmodics (for cramps), Antacids (for burning pain), Antibiotics (for bacterial infections), or Surgery (e.g., for appendicitis or gallstones).
Ayush (Siddha/Ayurveda) Treatment:
Balancing Vata Dosha (Ayurveda) or Vatham (Siddha) which governs movement and is responsible for pain/gas. Remedies include Ajwain (Carom seeds), Hingwashtak Churna, or Dashamula. Warm water and ginger tea are recommended
Homeopathy Treatment:
Colocynthis (cramping pain that is better by bending double/pressure), Magnesia Phosphorica (neuralgic pain, better by heat), or Chamomilla (pain associated with irritability).
Yoga & Diet:
Yoga: Balasana (Child’s Pose) or Apanasana (Knees-to-Chest Pose) to relieve gas. Diet: Avoid hard-to-digest, spicy, or gassy foods (beans, cabbage). Consume boiled/steamed rice and vegetables during acute episodes.
